Phase 1 Orthodontics (Early Treatment)
In the Gardendale, Goldsmith, Greenwood, and Spraberry Area
Phase 1 orthodontics focuses on early treatment for children while they are still growing. By addressing developing issues at the right time, we can help guide jaw growth, create space for incoming teeth, and reduce the need for more complex treatment later.

Phase 1 treatment typically begins between ages 6–10, while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth.
At this stage, we focus on:
• Guiding jaw development
• Creating space for permanent teeth
• Correcting harmful bite patterns
• Supporting proper facial growth
Not every child needs early treatment, but timely intervention can make a significant difference in long-term outcomes.
Signs Your Child May Benefit
Early orthodontic evaluation can help identify issues before they become more complex. Common signs include:
• Crowded or overlapping teeth
• Early or late loss of baby teeth
• Difficulty chewing or biting
• Mouth breathing
• Thumb sucking or oral habits
• Narrow upper jaw or crossbite
If you notice any of these, an evaluation can help determine the best next steps.
Benefits of Early Treatment
Phase 1 orthodontics can provide important advantages:
• Creates space for proper eruption of permanent teeth
• Guides jaw growth for improved facial balance
• Reduces the risk of impacted or severely crowded teeth
• May shorten or simplify future treatment
• Supports better breathing and function
Early treatment is about prevention as much as correction.
What to Expect
Evaluation
We begin with a comprehensive exam, including digital imaging, to assess your child’s teeth, jaw development, and bite.
Active Treatment
If Phase 1 treatment is recommended, it may involve appliances such as expanders, partial braces, or habit-correcting devices. Treatment typically lasts 9–12 months, depending on your child’s needs.
Resting Phase
After Phase 1, we monitor your child’s growth and allow remaining permanent teeth to come in naturally before considering Phase 2 (if needed).
Is Phase 1 Always Necessary?
Not every child requires early treatment. In some cases, the best approach is simply to monitor growth and begin treatment later.
Our goal is to recommend treatment only when it provides a clear benefit—not too early, and not too late.
Why Timing Matters
Orthodontic treatment is most effective when it works with natural growth. Addressing certain issues early can help avoid more invasive or complex procedures in the future.
By guiding development at the right time, we can help set the foundation for a healthy, confident smile.
